Is Facebook distracting you from your family and your work? Are you falling down the rabbit hole and accomplishing NOTHING? I have an EASY fix to show you How to Remove Facebooks Trending and News Feed while keeping your lists and groups intact!
You may think, at first glance, that this has nothing to do with time management. Well, the next time you open your Facebook Newsfeed, set a timer.

Update: I wrote this post almost two years ago and haven’t changed a thing. This is working perfectly for me and I rarely go on Facebook at all now, except for a few select groups. I feel so much better! Plus, a few situations in the last year have proven me to be 100% right about Facebook.
I do have to say that, if you go to your individual lists of friends, you may find very few posts in the feed and a note that you’ve reached the end of the feed. Since I have the lists, I now just click on an individual friend and go right to their wall.
Why Did I Drop Facebook’s Trending and News Feed?
The gist of it is this:
Negativity – from people and the platform itself
Yeah, that’s about it. Red hot negativity. So I Dropped it like it’s hot!
See, I firmly believe that you are the average of the 5 people you hang around with most. Well, I work alone at home so the majority of my contact with friends is online. With so much negative junk and fake new bombarding me from the Trending section (I really don’t care which useless ‘star’ is having a birthday and celebrating it with Spouse #5) and my Friends list every single time I went into it, I knew something had to change. On top of that, I had zero trust in Facebook as I realized the way they play their game.
The problem is that there were people I wanted to still be connected to, but I wanted it on MY terms. Facebook doesn’t like that – they want to control all you see, hear, and do.
“I have an idea. So just stop going there”, you say.
Yeah? You first. Impress me.
You know exactly what I mean. We are an addicted society. Addicted to our phones, addicted to social media, addicted to verbally crapping out our opinions online because MY OPINION MEANS MORE THAN YOURS SO I’M RIGHT.
I had enough. It was depressing. It was affecting my mental health.
So I quit.
Yes, I’m a quitter. And I feel so much better!
How Do I Get Off of Facebook?
In that post I wrote a while back, I mentioned the Chrome extension News Feed Eradicator for Facebook. It places a quote in place of the news feed and removes the Trending section. I’m using it to Remove Facebook’s Trending and News Feed.
You can search for it over in the Chrome Store. There are two versions there – the normal one and the feminist one. The only difference between them is the quotes. The normal one is a mixture of male and female while the feminist one has only female quotes. Another great feature is the ability to add your own quotes!
Not only that, but going on Facebook without the news feed and reading the quotes can actually make me even more motivated to work, so it’s preventing distraction AND motivating me. It’s been by far the best thing I’ve done for both productivity and sanity.

As you can see on the left, you will still have your Messenger, Groups, and Friend Lists. By the way, you DID listen to me and set up ALL your friends into lists, right? Don’t be that annoying friend who opens her friends up to being scammed.
On the right, you can see your list of pages if you expand it or just a number if you don’t. Apparently, I have no friends with birthdays on this date, but they normally appear here too.
It’s A Super Easy Way to get Your Sanity Back
See, it’s NOT you! It’s Facebook and all the social media platforms that want to control what you think, what you read, and what you see.
I really appreciate that this extension helps me step away when I choose without resorting to deactivating my account. Do I still want to sit on the couch with a can of Pringles and my Facebook news feed again soon? Darn right! But, for now, this allows me to protect my mental health and get my work done. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading this right now!
This is my solution …
… until Facebook makes the news feed and Trending OPTIONAL. (Update – it’s almost 2019 – they haven’t done it yet and I’ll bet the farm that they never will.)
You Can Disable the Extension Whenever You Want
Before you post below that there is no way to disable the extension so you can have a ‘couch potato/bonbon/potato chip lovefest’ with your Facebook news feed again, listen up. You can disable News Feed Eradicator by clicking *More Tools > Extensions* in the Chrome menu, then unchecking the box to disable it. Then veg out to your heart’s content.
It’s quick and easy to Remove Facebook’s Trending and News Feed. Go add it and then let me know below if it’s helped you focus on what you need to accomplish!
